Home / News & Events / Blanche Motts Award 2017 News & Events Blanche Motts Merit Award 2017 Recipient Announced In 1976, Blanche Motts was the Director of the Senior Citizens Program at the downtown Canton YMCA. She decided that older adults in Stark County should have a big party every year, hence where Senior Day began. Her ability to mobilize volunteers and utilize community resources has sustained this event for more than 4 decades. Even though she is no longer with us, her spirit thrives in the vitality this event brings to Stark County every year in May. 2017 Blanche Motts Merit Award Recipient JOAN WALSH Joan Walsh married Fredrick Walsh in 1957. While he was stationed in Virginia, she worked as a school nurse. They returned to Ohio and raised six children after his retirement from the US Army in 1969. Joan worked for Timken Mercy Medical Center for 28 years. As Oncology Care Coordinator, Joan served on the Oncology committee. Joan was a member of the American Cancer Society, Canton Chapter and was named "Nurse of Hope". She also played Mrs. Claus at the hospital, alongside her husband's Santa Claus. She also worked on the Hall of Fame parade floats for the hospital. Since 1995, Joan has been a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart, a non-profit Veterans organization helping ALL Veterans. She was Region II President and moved into the National level serving as Junior and Senior Vice President and National resident in 2003-2004. She has also served on the National Finance committee. Joan served on the Purple Heart Monument committee for the city of Massillon in 2014. She was also named Massillon's Senior of the Year 2015. She has served the past 4 years on Massillon's Patriotic Care Committee, raising funds for markers that are placed in Veteran's Park. In 2016, Joan was appointed by Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry to serve on the Stark County Area Agency on Aging/Direction Home Advisory Council. Joan is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she is a Eucharistic minister and is active with the St. Mary's quilters group. She is a member of the Mercy Alumni Association. She is the grandmother of nine and great grandmother of two.
